Case Competition Winners All Around!

April 20, 2015| Dr. Laura Erskine

Last week, HPM students continued UCLA’s streak of fantastic showings at healthcare management case competitions! A team including HPM students Caitlyn Penny (MBA-MPH) and Kumar Ghandi (MD-MPH) won the Second Annual Cleveland Clinic Case Competition by impressing Cleveland Clinic executives with their strategy for Cleveland Clinic Florida. Their strategic plan, which included doubling down on reputation and success in integrated care, impressed the judges with its specificity and solid financial analysis.

A second team of HPM students won the 5th Annual College Bowl Case Competition jointly hosted by all three California chapters of the Association of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). Class of 2016 students Claire Crawley, Vivian Lei, Aleksandra Van Loggerenberg, and Albert Funes presented a strategy for Daughters of Charity (DCHS) to manage their financial crisis in light of the failed deal with Prime Healthcare. Their plan, which recognized the desperate cash situation, used a combination of closures and sales to inject cash into the system, preserved jobs and pensions for employees, and allowed for a continuity of the DCHS mission of providing care to the sick and poor.

Please congratulate these students if you see them in the hallways!
