A big round of applause goes out to Rachel Hornstein, 2nd year MPH student in our department, who won the grand-prize in the 2013 Student Competition. The event was held at the 39th Annual Breslow Lecture on February 25, 2013 in the UCLA NRB Auditorium.

Higher rates of ADHD, asthma and learning problems seen in overweight children, study shows

THURSDAY, Jan. 17 (HealthDay News) -- Obese children -- already known to be at higher risk for heart disease and other ills in adulthood -- may also experience more immediate problems, including asthma, learning disabilities and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, according to a new study.

The US spends $750 billion every year on medical care that does nothing to improve health.

Institute of Medicine Honors Three Members for Outstanding Service

WASHINGTON — Today at its 42nd annual meeting, the Institute of Medicine honored members Haile T. Debas, Linda Rosenstock, and Gail Warden for their outstanding service.

Nationally, only 65 people are inducted annually.  Dr. Needleman's citation references his tremendous impact on quality of care and on the effects of nurse staffing ratios.  This is a tremendous honor.  Induction into the IOM is based on several major accomplishments:

Improving nutrition, physical activity in minority communities is key

Researchers at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health and UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center have been awarded a $20 million federal grant to further their innovative efforts to curb obesity, a global pandemic that has reached the level of a national crisis in the United States.
