Dr. Jack Needleman has been elected to the Institute of Medicine!

Nationally, only 65 people are inducted annually.  Dr. Needleman's citation references his tremendous impact on quality of care and on the effects of nurse staffing ratios.  This is a tremendous honor.  Induction into the IOM is based on several major accomplishments:

• Four of his publications on quality of care and effects of resident hour reductions are designated patient safety classics by AHRQ.
• A 2002 NEJM publication on inpatient nurse staffing and quality gained international recognition, was featured on CBS 60 Minutes, catalyzed passage of the Nurse Reinvestment Act (2002), and led to the Joint Commission’s developing new standard for inpatient nursing performance. 
• His 2006 Health Affairs article on the business and social case for investing in hospital nurses was the journal’s most downloaded publication of the year.
• A 2011 NEJM article on nurse staffing and mortality was designated an Instant Classic by AHRQ. The Joint Commission, NQF, RWJF and others have drawn upon his expertise developing, testing, and refining quality measures.
• Dr. Needleman was awarded AcademyHealth’s first Health Services Research Impact Award for his work.
• He received the rare honor for a non-nurse of being inducted as an Honorary Fellow into the American Academy of Nursing for his scholarship and its worldwide impact.
