Our nation's Surgeon General plays an important role in safeguarding and improving our collective health by sharing the best available scientific information on a range of issues with the American public. In the past, the Surgeon General has been a respected truth-teller whose pronouncements were widely heeded. Unfortunately political considerations and special interests have applied increasing pressure to the Office of the Surgeon General and its ability to serve as the nation’s leading scientific voice on public health. In this last Health Forum of the academic year—presented in collaboration with the UCLA Center for Health Advancement and the de Beaumont Foundation—we will be screening the 2016 award-winning documentary Public Health and Politics: Examining the Surgeon General, to be followed by a discussion on the broader issues at hand within the interplay of politics and health.
